About Hornby Island

Hornby's heart is the community which calls the island home. Many islanders came for a weekend, were enchanted, and never left. During the peak of the summer season our population swells to over 8,000 people, with a winter population of approx. 900. Hornby is no longer an "undiscovered" jewel, but the inventiveness, creativity and commitment to community remains. Most of our community organizations could not exist without the dedication and support of islanders. There are few who have not volunteered at a fundraising event, participated on a board or committee, built a trail or cooked a meal for someone in need. This culture of caring and involvement is something we are very proud of. General Information provides an introduction about many aspects of life on Hornby Island. Hornby History takes us on a journey from three hundred and fifty million years ago to present time.

The Community Vision section documents a process that was instigated to create a picture of the future that Hornby Islanders wanted for the Island, and provide another means by which Islanders can have more local control. The 2002 Visioning Project was co-ordinated by the Community Economic Enhancement Corporation and took a year to complete with over 500 community members participating.
