Rachelle Chinnery

Rachelle Chinnery grew up in Montreal, Quebec and has made her home on the West Coast since 1995. She moved to Hornby Island with her husband Doug to be closer to the ocean and live a quiet life. Her translucent carved porcelain is in private and public collections around the world and has received awards in Australia, Korea, and Canada. In 2007, Rachelle was a recipient of The British Columbia Creative Achievement Award and she was a NICHE Award finalist for 2009. In 2009 her work was selected for The International Postmodern Ceramics Festival: Ceramica Multiplex 2009, in Varazdin, Croatia, one of the largest juried ceramic exhibitions in Europe. Most recently, she was nominated nominated as a finalist for the 2010 NICHE Awards in the category of Thrown Ceramics. Her most recent work, sponsored by HIAC, is Portrait of an Ocean: A Body of Words, is a collection of sculptural vessels and written word.

Kayaking expeditions off Vancouver Island's western shores are the well source of inspiration for her sculptural work. Her line of carved porcelain reflects the patterning of intertidal sands.

You can find Rachelle at the Farmers' Market on Wednesdays and Saturdays or you can visit her in her studio by appointment
