Rae Maté

When Vancouver-born artist Rae Maté heard The Lord's Prayer recited in first grade, she believed that the phrase, "Our Father who 'art' in Heaven" referred to the Creator indulging His passion for drawing and painting. Since graduating from Emily Carr College of Art and Design in 1986, Rae has been a prolific practicing artist, participating in many solo and group shows on Hornby Island as well as Quadra Island, Victoria, Vancouver and Richmond BC. Her original flower and landscape paintings can be found in guestrooms of Coast Hotels throughout B.C. and her popular handmade art cards featuring a wide variety of images of flowers and still life, people, cats and friendly crocodiles are sold in local stores and craft markets.

Rae also enjoys teaching Parent and Me classes to preschoolers at Vancouver Arts Umbrella. She is the illustrator of two picture books published by Tradewind Books: "Crocodiles Say..." and "Crocodiles Play!" by poet Robert Heidbreder. Her third picture book, "Pussycat, Pussycat, Where Have You Been?" by Dan Bar-el, will be published by Simply read Books in Spring 2011. It is a beautiful and classic tale of an adventurous world-traveling cat and the little girl who waits for his return.

Rae and her husband Gabor have three grown children and live in Vancouver, but for over 20 years, during the summer and for shorter stays in all seasons, Rae feels privileged to make art in heaven on Hornby Island, B.C.
