Wayne Wiens Portrait

Wayne Wiens

I have recently retired from teaching adolescents after 32 years but I have been a student of photography for 40 years. In that time I have learned that good photography requires the right light and a good eye. Luck is frequently a factor as well. But more important than all is one's interaction with the subject.

I taught in North Vancouver, but have been a visitor and more recently a part-time resident of Hornby Island since 1971. I have been displaying and selling my photographic work on Hornby for the last 5 years, and continue to provide cards, photos and posters for the Quilters' annual show, the Fall Fair and the Community Quilt Raffle. In so doing I have helped raise money for the Hornby Island Community Fund, on whose Board I sit, and helped to raise the community's awareness of the nature of this Fund.

Over the last few years I have been making a series of cards concentrating on the people of Hornby - the pioneers, the workers, the farmers, the artists and the children of the island. It continues to be my wish to honour and celebrate the diversity and the spirit of the island; the skills and talent and dedication; the social and community conscience; as seen in the Island's individual and collective achievements and events. I continue to develop new ways to make and to present my photos. Recently I have created an anniversary, or birthday, calendar featuring Hornby Island gardens. Others will be ready soon, one featuring Hornby land and seascapes, the other featuring Hornby Island quilts.
