Marc Atkinson Electric

The Marc Atkinson
Electric Project

Dance at Joe King Park
Friday, November 21 - 9pm
Joe King Ball Park
Funky, twangy, blues dance

In the past year, three musicians came together with a love for electric guitar and blues/funk grooves and a new band was immediately formed - The Marc Atkinson Electric Project. This group features our own Marc Atkinson on electric guitar, "dream drummer" Bill Hick's and Joey Smith on electric bass. If you were lucky, you caught their first (and fantastic) Hornby show at the Bakery this past summer.

Joining Marc will be Bill Hicks, a natural virtuoso on the drums since childhood. He was the winner of the National Best Drummer of Canada Award for two years running at the early ages of 15 and 16. A long-term member of the Powder Blues Band he has performed with Diana Krall and Phil Dwyer. Many fknow Joey Smith via one of his many performances on Hornby. Originally coming to Victoria from Tennessee via the Glenn Miller Orchestra, Joey has played with various artists traveling through the region, including Cleo Laine and John Dankworth, Herb Ellis, Charlie Byrd, and Rosemary Clooney. For this show, the group will be joined for the first time by the fantastic keyboard player, Chad Geekie.

This group plans to record their first CD of Atkinson originals in Spring 2009. Watch for it!

Experience amazing sounds of the Camaroon Forests with Sue Hart from Baka Beyond.

This singing is as collective and co-operative as the Baka's egalitarian society.

Topics covered :

  • Listening skills - the essence of forest singing!
  • forest vocal technique, breath control, voice placement, and vocal release work
  • vocal and hand clapped rhythm work and the patterns of Baka melodies, chant sand calls
  • songs for baby soothing
  • multi-part singing. Densely textured songs with overlapping, polyrhythmic interdependent parts
  • co-operative musical games and movement

Silent Meditation Retreats
Oct. 24-27th & Nov 7-14th

Deerheart Sanctuary

These retreats are rare opportunities to turn inward in an environment where the space is being held for deep inquiry into the absolute truth of your being. No one can really describe what experience awaits you as you turn inward and open to silence. It must be experienced, a conceptual understanding is not it. There is only one authority and that comes from within.

You will be guided to maintain absolute fidelity with your deepest experience. Simply allow what you are experiencing to be the ultimate truth in that moment without identifying with any story about those experiences.

Visit for complete retreat information.

Caroline James - Art in the Orchard

Art In The Orchard

Featuring "Lovesong" - 25 New Paintings by Caroline James

Guest Artist Alastair Heseltine

Opens Friday August 15 (5 to 9 pm)
Exhibition Runs: August 16, 17 & 18th
(10 am to 4 pm)

At "The Orchard House"
1835 Shingle Spit Rd.
Hornby Island, BC

I'm delighted to be holding this exhibition at The Orchard House on Hornby Island, which offers a spectacular garden setting with stunning seascape views (my heartfelt gratitude to Deb Ouellet for providing this wonderful venue).

The orchard, like the canvas, displays subtle texture and form, innocuous richness supporting life and offering mystery; quietly accepting its role as a backdrop for the beautiful bird, and yet whispering its own enigmatic splendour. The bird sings a 'love song' because it knows.

Hornby Island Community Hall
Thursday April 17

This new CD sports compositions that are punchy, driving and rhythmically inventive. Marc will be joined on stage by long-time Trio member, bassist Joey Smith (formerly with the Glen Miller Orchestra), and on rhythm guitar by Hornby's own talented Reuben Wier. Embracing a lifetime of musical influences, new fatherhood and island living, Marc composed the Trio's fourth CD at his Sandpiper home. The Trio, formed in 2000, has toured North America, England and Europe and has received standing ovations everywhere from the Montreal Jazz Festival to the Vancouver International Folk Festival to DjangoFest Northwest. The Trio will also be playing at the Denman Community Hall, April 11th.

The performance will begin at 8 pm and the doors will open at 7:30 pm. Tickets will be on sale at the door for $15.
