Michael John Thompson, Antiquarian Bookseller

Thompson Rare Books

Michael grew up in Toronto and Vancouver. He first came to Hornby in 1974, to help his family build the wooden schooner Starswan at the boatworks near the Shire. After finishing school in Vancouver, he went on to become a book scout, and later a rare book dealer. He has run rare book shops in downtown Vancouver, Gastown, UBC, and in Victoria; he is President Emeritus of the Antiquarian Booksellers' Association of Canada, and he has represented the Canadian rare book trade at meetings in Florence and Vienna. He bought a house on Hornby in 2004 and moved his entire business here; the house is now over-run with books and children.

Michael deals mostly in rare books, in literary first editions, old fantasy books, science fiction, mystery and detective fiction and occult & metaphysical books; his shop - located in his front yard - is open by appointment and is always open on-line at thompsonrarebooks.com.
